THE FLORA MANSLAUGHTER CASE.

[Bek Pares Association.! AUCKLAND, August 13. At the Police Court this morning Thomas Dowd, master of the scow Flora, was charged with manslaughter in connection with the drowning of Frederick Clark by the sinking of the scow in Auckland harbor. Accused was remanded for a week on bail, one surety of £IOO.

NAPIER, August 13. The Hawke.? Bay School Committees Association was formed at a meeting to-night, at which eleven committees were represented. It was decided to adopt the constitution of the Dunedin and Suburbs Association with slight modifications to meet local conditions.

HOME FOR GIRLS OPENED, A large building in Priestly Road, erected by the France Trustees, and occupied as a Home for Girls, the control of the Hawke’s Bay Chil-' dren’s Home Committee, was formally opened this afternoon by the Mayor of Napier (Mr. J. Vigoor Brown) in the presence of a large attendance of ladies arid gentlemen.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 13. At jhe Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Denniston sat in Banco to hear a motion for a new trial of the case of Norton v. Stringer v. Norton, in which in May 25th, -before Mr. Justice Denniston the sum of £2OOO was awarded by the iury to Mr. T. W. Stringer, K.C., as damages for libel in. Jolm Norton’s newspaper "Truth.” Norton appeared in person, and argued at great length. Further hearing was adjourned until to-morrow morning.

WESTPORT COAL COMPANY. DUNEDIN,' August 13. The directors of the Westport Coal Company have declared a dividend of 3s 6cl per share' for the half-year ended June 30. payable on the 2oth inst.
