The U.S.S. Co.’s Moura arrived early on Saturday morning from south, and got away a little after 1 p.m. for Auckland. She returns here on Wednesday. The U.S.S. Co.’s Tarawera returned from Auckland yesterday morning, and proceeded on her journey south during the evening. „ , „ , The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall left here about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon with a general cargo for Auckland. She will return from Auckland this evening, via Tologa Bay. The U.S.S. Co.’s Flora should leave Auckland to-morrow' for Coast bays, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. Messrs Evans, Nield and Co. were adised on Saturday that the scovy Waikonini is expected to leave for Gisborne this evening with a full load of timber from Wliitianga, for that firm. The schooner Awanui was expected to sail from-Auckland os, Saturday for Wlutianga to obtain a load of timber for the same firm, and the steamer Holmdal© is to sail from Greymouth for Gisborne in about three weeks’ time, also with a full load of timber for Messrs Evans, Nield and Co. __ . The work of re-launching the Union Company’s Taviuni at Westport has been”suspended for a few wee’ksy as the uneu wlio were to cut an the western breakwater for taking the vessel through into the channel are now occupied in repairing that portion of the wall damaged by the late heavy weather. Mr J. Daniel, who is in charge of the Taviuni’s re-launching, has dispensed with the services of his men for a while, as it will be four or five weeks before opening has been made in the wall for the vessel to pass through. Captain Higgins, of the steamer Clan McTnnes, which arrived at Auckland from San Francisco last week, is a New Zealander born, belonging to Wellington. Captain Higgins started his seafaring career in the Union Company and about sixteen years ago transferred to the Clan line, since which time he has not visited these shores ■until the present occasion, When he was welcomed by his aged father and his sisters. Captain Higgins joined the Clan line as a fourth mate, and _in ten years’ time be rose to the position of master. His first command was in the' steamer Clan McKay, and .while in that vessel he effected the rescue of 460 Portuguese troops who had been shipwrecked on a reef in the Red. Sea. For this service Captain Higgins received a decoration from the Portuguese Government. Captain Higgins has been m charge of the Clan Mclnnes ' for the past two years.
