Wanganui kept up the pressure, and in the loverty Bay 25 tlio defenders were awarded, two penalties In quick succession, but Wanganui returned to the attack, iollock and Miller saving. The M anganui backs were passing well, and gamed a lot of ground, being nearly over once, Fitzgerald saving in time. 1 nut of a very interesting nature. owing to the state of the ban and With Wanganui forcing matteis, YVatchorn saved brilliantly twice in quick succession, but McLeod mark, and had an unsuccessful attempt at goal. A passing run between Watchorn 1 ollock, and Miller ended in the latter foolishly kicking straight to tho iuU back, losing a good chance to score. Wanganui were again penalised twice in rapid succession, the game being fast and furious. The Wanganui backs were passing fairly well, and the f° were shining m the loose work, they brought play to the Poverty Bay 20, where Pollock intercepted and put m a fine swerving run to the full-back, and kicked over the latter s head. It was a pretty piece of play,. and deserved a score. Play centred in midfield. Ivaipara, Watchorn and Nehu were prominent for "ood defence, but Wanganui giadually worked their way down the line, and Miller fumbling nearly let them in. Delaney, however saved his side by coming through the ruck with the ball at his toe, and the interval was called with Poverty Bay pressing, with no score on either side. , A series of scrums and line-outs occurred on the resumption of play. Wanganui had slightly the better of the exchanges, but Poverty Bay soon asserted themselves and attacked strongly, but from a weak pass_ from Kaipara to Pollock, Leahy and Coe broke away to'midfield- .Here Wanganui were penalised, and Fitzgerald s kick just missed the posts. Loose play in midfield followed the lack-out. The ‘Wanganui forwards carried play to the Poverty Bay line, where Watchorn splendidly saved by a lack te oentre. Not to be denied, the Wanganui forwards returned’ to the attack, and kept Poverty Bay busy defending, and. when hard pressed. a penalty brought timely relief. Watchoin was again prominent with an opportune save and kick, and the next item of interest was Rylan , who fielded -beautifully, making a strong run down to the Wanganui Ime where be was taken by Meuli. In the latter stages of the game each side ate tacked in turn, and both teams were nearly over. Poverty Bay had, perhaps, the best of the spell, with the exception of about ten minutes, iollock and WMtchorn were responsible tor good work repeatedly, and time wearin" on, it looked any odds on being scoreless draw. Poverty Bay however played hard, and the forwards rushed to Meuli, who kicked m-field. With only half a minute to go, Pollock obtianed, and, beating several men, ran to the full-back and kicked tiie ball over tlie latter’s head, and following it up secured it again on the bounce, and though hotly pursued, ran over, scorin" a clever try. Fitegerald s kick from a difficult angle just failed. Amidst enthusiasm, Poverty Bay were declared the winners by 3 to ml m their first game against W r anganui. Mr. L. J. Furrie refereed.
