Mr M.. McLean, contractor for the big tunnel under .Arthur’s Pass, told a Christchurch reporter that, if all the .material lie has to deal with is of the same character as that which he has met with up to the present' time, there should he no difficulty at all in completing the work in four years. He said that the'tunnel-was now into the hill for fifty-three chains on the Otira side and three chaius on the Bealey side. At the Otira it had been widened out for about- fifteen chains. All the electric installations were working well, and, on the whole, very satisfactory progress was being made. An electrical engineer in the North Island is busy perfecting an airship, or aerial car, of the heavier than air type, but which will lift directly and vertically from' the ground, and solely by mechanical means, and which will, if wanted, remain stationary in the air at any desired height, The model is said to rise directly from table or lloor, and can then be propelled in any direction. This airship is built, on an entirely new principle, and no gas is used to balance gravity, as in the Zieppelin ship.— ‘ ‘Dominion.”
