POVERTY BAY CLUB, At the local links yesterday afternoon a couple of games m tlio.jinoii’s A tournament- were played off. Geoff. Wil--lock (scr) defeated Pare Keilia (pins 1) rather easily by 4 up and 3 to play. The former played steadily throughout, and did the round in the good score ot S 3. The veteran played hi s usual accurate game, but the brilliant play of the younger man told its tale. W. It. Barker (6) and N. Bull (5) also met in the A tournament. After a closely-fought round, the former won w l up. by a putt on the 18th green. Miss Nolan and F. T. Morgan (9) met Mrs. Wil lock and G. M. Dodgshun (2) in the semi-final of the Mixed Foursome tournament. A close and exciting *ame ended in a win for the formar by 2up and Ito play. Miss tan and Morgan have now to meet ; s Tucker and A. H. Wallace (15) in the final. To-morrow afternoon a bogey competition will figure on the card. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. [Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., August 19. There was delightful weather for the postponed starting of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championship at Hokowhitu. The sandy links had thrown off tho water wonderfuly, and beyond that the ground was soft round about four greens, and a small lake made an. additional hazard at one. thy course was in really good order. The first round of the championship resulted in two oxchampions going out, Miss Rattray (Dunedin), thrice champion, went down to Miss Braitliwaite (Hastings), by 3 and 2, after playing much below form. Mrs. Bidwill (Wairarapa), another exchampion -of New Zealand, went out to Miss B. Wood (Christchurch) on the 18th hole. The present champion, Miss Christie (Oamaru) had a bye. Other leading players came through without trouble. _ _ __ , The course, under the L.G.U. system, was 82, and tho nearest anyone got to it was 93, by Mrs. Bevan, in the championship match. This was closely followed by a 94 by Miss Snodgrass (Westland) in the Handicap, and 95 by lies Stephenson, the Taranaki crack, and an ex-champion. , , Tho winning team lit the teams match, Wairarapa, actually had an average of only a fraction under lUb. Miss Stephenson’s 95, for Ngamotu, was five less than any other score in the teams’ match, which was decided on the stroke handicap of tho afternoon. The Stroke Handicap saw Miss Humphries (Christchurch) produce a good round of 100, and as she had a 21 handicap, it netted 79. To-morrow the second round m the championship will be played, as well as the ladies’ foursomes. The results of this afternoons play were as follows: — —Teams’ Match. —
