SETTLING THE LAND. li'KK VttKRB Association.] , 1 AUCKLAND, 'August 20. A portion of the To Akau block winch was purchased from we Natives by the Government a year or two ago wd hk onen for selection under tho optional at Auckland and Ngarua.vah.a on October 11th. Thin part of the block, which has been roaded by tho Lands Department, consists of some hi 000 acres of some of the best land m {ho block. There have already been a large number of inquiries m regard to it, and a record application list is oxnected. The Lands Department have lately entered into negotiations for the purchase of further portions of the To A kau block, situated on the north and south of the portion already purchased, bat to the north being the property of the Ngatitahinga tribe, whilst that the south is owned qy the famui tribe Mr Patterson, chief accountant of the Lands Department, is now m the district in connection with the purchase of this land, which is hot yet concluded. -V sitting of the Native j iiilid Court will he held at Ngaruawaliia on September 28th for the purpose of dealing with the Moetangi block, consisting of some 45,000 acres. About half-a-dozen Natives or the V. aiknte and Ngatimaniapoto tribes are interested in the block. PROPOSED BATHS FOR DANXKVIItKE. DANNEVIRJvE, August 20. A meeting of ratepayers to-night decided in favor cl the proposal te est-ib-Xisli baths at a cost of £i.<ou. Jhe poll is to be taken on Ist September. ROTORUA SANATORIUM CHARGES WELLINGTON. August 20. The following now scale of charges for residence, medical attendance, meuicinc, nursing, and baths at Rotorua Sanatorium is gazetted: Patients admitted under regulations 3 and. 4, per week £1 10s; patients admitted under regulation 5. per week. £1 Is; patients admitted under regulation 6, per week £2 2s; patients admitted under regulation, free. FIRE IN WELLINGTON. A ten-rcomed house in Lome street, owned by Mr E. J. Jeliicoe. and oecu pied bv eeveral tenants, was damaged by fire early this morning. The insurances are £llOO on the building in the Royal, and on the furniture £255 in the Ocean, and £2OO in the United. One of the occupants, Airs Margaret Milroy, severely injured her leg through jumping from an upstairs window when escape by the stairs was cut off. A member of the Fire Brigade was injured by coining into contact with a broken electric wire, but his injuries ore not serious. NEW LAND REGULATIONS. New regulations under the Lands Improrement and Native La-ids Acquisition Act, 1894, are gazetted. LAND AND INCOME TAX REI URNS Owing to delay in furnishing the re turns, the Land* and lncime Tax Department are instituting prosecutions against offenders all over the Do.a nion. EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION". A special meeting of the executive of the Wellington Employers’ Association was held to-day to consider the question of nominating a successor to the late Mr. S. Brown as employers’ representative on the Arbitration Court. It was unanimously resolved that the Advisory Board be requested to recommend industrial unions of employers to nominate Mr. W. Scott, of Dunedin, as the employers’ representative if he will consent to nomination. POLICE COMMISSION. The time of the a oliee Commission in which to make its report has been extended to September 30th.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL.
A conference of delegates from the local bodies adopted a scheme for a new infectious diseases hospital, costing approximately £13,000 complete. The local bodies are to find half the money, and the Government the other halfThe Wellington City Council will be responsble for 84.42 per cent of £6400. the rest being distributed among the other local bodies. AN UNEMPLOYED ROUGH. NELSON, August 20. An unemployed man named J. Judge went to the Nelson Labor Bur mu yesterday after mm mod asked for workHa was told that none was a vai'&b'o, whereupon he said he wanted a night’s o-d and lodgings. He had ir> a and would get what he a t*cl lv bicaking a glass door, so they had bet ter send for the police at once. Judge then proceeded to put his fist through the door, breaking the glass. He was arrested, and got a night’s lodgings. This morning he was fined 13s 6d, cost of the glass. He was given seven days for payment, after which a warrant may be issued. LOST IN THE SNOW. CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. No trace of the missing man Donald McLean, who was lost in the mountains west of Hamner, have been found. A strong search party under the leadership of Constable Bird left this morning to search between Jollie’s Pass and Clarence, accommodation house. The snow is thawing very fast over the country. DUNEDIN, August 20. The Morniugton Borough Council has appointed Mr Frank Young, at present town clerk of Gore, to the position of town clerk and tramways manager. the LAWRENCE-EOXBURGH RAILWAY. The Minister of Works assured a Dunedin depuation that the stoppage of tho Lawrence-Roxburgh line is only temporary. Work will be prosecuted after the other Otago lines in hand aT© completed. - "
