ENORMOUS LOSSES. THRILLING ESCAPES AND HEROIC RESCUES. Unitjcd Pnicsa Association— Copyright MELBOURNE, August 23. It is impossible yet to estimate tho damage by tho floods. The losses in crops and , stock and other property have been enormous. Many families have practically lost all. The railway washaways are being rapidly repaired. It is expected that the running generally will be restored today. The floods everywhere are rapidly receding. The fuller details disclose many thrilling escapes and heroic efforts on the part of rescuers. There were numerous cases in which people had to be taken from roofs, after occupying dangerous, positions for many hours at the height bf the flood. Tho whole township of Punpanyup was submerged by 4£ feet of water. It rose so rapidly that people were caught abed. They made a hurried exit. Both reservoirs burst.
An hotel at Banyena was completely washed away. The fatalities cabled yesterday were a man named Ellis, at Snake Valley, and an unknown man at Emer.
