The U.S.S. Co.’s Tarawera arrived from south early yesterday morning, and got away for Auckland about , 10.30 a.m. The scow Waikonini sailed about noon yesterday for Auckland. The Huddart-Parker Co.’s Wimmera arrived from Sydney an& Auckland yesterday afternoon, and sailed again for south during the evening. The Wimmera completed another smart trip from Sydney to Auckland. She took her departure from Sydney at 2 p.m. on Wednesday last, and met with good weather on tne voyage, reaching Auckland at 7.45 a.m. on Sunday. The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall arrived in the roadstead from Auckland and Tologa Bay yesterday afternoon, but will not come up the river till this afternoon. The following cargo was brought by the ketch Coronation: —47,000 ft of timber for Clayton Bros, 15,000 ft for J. Colley, 11,000 ft for J. Townley, 10.000 ft for G. Smith, and 7000 ft for Robb Bros. After discharging, the Coronation leaves for Tairua, via ToBay. I'he U.S.S. Co.’s Wanaka left the Bluff at 2.30 yesterday for Oamaru, Tininru, Napier, Gisborne, 'and Auckland. „• A , The s..s Holmdale left Onehunga on Monday for Greymouth to load timber for Gisborne. . The auxiliary schooner Waiapu sails to-day for Auckland, via Cape Runaway. - : l '.. - _ ' . : The .late Captain William Scotland, who for many years held command oi various ships and steamers belonging* to the Shaw, Savill and) Albion Company, left estate of the va;ue of £14,625, of which the net personality has been sworn at £14,575. Huddart, Parker and Co.’s new cargo steamer Werribee accomplished what is claimed as a record at Melbourne for coal discharging at the railways a couple of weeks ago. She began discharging at half-past nine on Wednesday morning, and left for Geelong at six o’clock on the following morning, having discharged 2990 tons of coal during that time, and then only working eleven gangs instead of sixteen, which is the maximum number her gear is adapted for. Talking- of ocean races to a '‘New Zealand Times” representative, a marine engineer of many years’ experience said that the engine-room staff nowadays very seldom took stock of alleged deep-sea speed contests between their steamer and another winch chanced to be going to the same destination. So long as a fair average passage was made it mattered little to the engineroom which vessel got to the destinetion first.
