A MISSING MAN.
' ARDUOUS BUT UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH. [Pun Pititsa Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 25.. The search for the missing man Donald McLean at Hanmer Springs has been abandoned for the present, there being no hope of finding him alive. Constables Bird (of Culverden), Lyons (of Amberley) and Smithers (of Kaiapoi), who had been conducting the search with the assistance of a number of volunteers, returned ,fo their stations yesterday. Constable Bird, who had ben out for a week, suffered some rough experiences. He was joined by the other constables on Friday, and there was no lack of volunteers for the work. The cold was intense; and when one member of the party fell into the river, his clothes were frozen hard on him. The snow has heen rapidly melting; and if there is no further fall there will be better prospects of finding traces of McLean. He was about 35 years of age, and it Js believed that he had no relatives in iNew Zealand.
