The wicket was much faster. Whitty caught Tarrant with a good right-handed catch at mid-on. Three for 188. Armstrong was maintaining a fine length. l no batting continued steadily, 200 being compiled in 190 minutes.. Warner showed fine defence. Robertson played a capital innings, lasting 75 minutes. Four for 256. Hobden yyas taken easily ft raid-on. Five for 302. Warner gave a chance at the wicket ofr Armstiong his total then standing at 126. Rain set in steadily, and llis stumps were drawn at 5 o clock.
COUNTIES AND COLONIALS. (Received August 25, 11.10 August 20. Mr. C. E. Green, the old-time cricketer and ex-president of the' Marylebone Club, in a letter to the- newspapers, strongly protests against counties approaching colonial cricketers, and suggest that counties refuse to play any county inducing coloniaL cricketers to- quality. HAWKE’S BAY CRICKET ASSOCIATION. (Ter Press Association.) NAPIER, August 25. At a meeting of the Hawke s Bay Cricket Association to-night it was decided to cable to Mr. E. H. VnliamS, at present in England, instructing him to close with the offer of the services of Board, the English professional, as a coach for the Association. . [J. H. Board was born m Ibbv, and is a member of the Gloucestershire and M.C.C. elevens. He is a great wicketkeeper and a good bat. During the past five seasons lie has) stumped 166 batsmen in first-class cricket. He was a member of A. E. Stoddart s eleven in Australia 1897-8, and visited South Africa twice, under Lord Hawko and Pelham Warner respectively. He has on four occasions exceeded 1000 runs for a season in first-class cricket.]
