STREET LIGHTING.

DISCUSSION AT THE BOROUGH

COUNCIL.

At the, meeting, of the Gisborne Borough Council last evening, a letter was received from the secretary to the Gas Company in' reference to the Council's complaint regarding lighting, and notified the Council of proposed increases in the charges for. lighting, extinguishing, cleaning and maintenance of street lamps. The Mayor said they would have to accept the terms of 4s 6d per lamp per month for the supply of gas, but he thought that the Council should take over the work of lighting, extinguishing, and maintenance. Or. Darton suggested that a subcommittee, consisting of Crs. Clayton, Kirk, and himself, be set up to enquire into the position between the Gas Co. and the Council, and bring up- a full report to the Council. The motion was seconded by Cr. Harris, who said that it was necessary to have an understanding as to what extent the Gas Company had a monopoly Or. Pettie moved as an amendment that the letter be referred to the Works Oommittee to confer with the directors of the Gas Gompany and make the best possible terms. Cr. Kirk supported the motion proposed by Or. Darton. He thought the motion gave them an opportunity of doing some good. ■ Cr. Collins said that if the information was necessary it should be obtained from the Works Committee, but suggested that the Council deal wiffrf the letter immediately. The motion was supported by Crs. Smith,„Somervell, and’ Clayton. The latter said that the information would bo welcomed by the. ratepayers, as many complaints had been made recently regarding insufficient lighting. The Mayor said that in view of a previous resolution, notice of motion would be required. Tli-e Mayor seconded the amendment. Cr. Darton then altered his motion to read that the letter be referred to tlie Special Committee lie had mentioned to report, and that the Gas Co.’s directors be asked to stay their hands in the matter. The amendment was lost and the motion carried, the Mayor and Crs. Pettie and Collins voting against it.
