Pleasants, Liberal candidate for Oroua seat at last election, has been presented with a purse _of sovereigns from Liberals of the district. GOOD PROSPECTS IN OROUA DISTRICT. Danners state that the outlook ior the district is specially promising, particularly for dairying. RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD. NAPIER, August 28. A sitting of the Railway Appeal Board was held here to-day to hear evidence on an appeal of Henry Goldsmith, carpenter, against the decision of the Department withholding an increase of pay. The evidence of the workshops foreman and senior hands indicated that applicant’s methods were slow and leisurely, and he had failed to show that interest in the work which warranted an increase of wages. After consultation, the chairman (Dr. McCarthy) announced that the Board was unanimous in dismissing the appeal.
FALSE PRETENCES. WELLINGTON, August 28. At the Supreme Court, Edward John B Clough, for obtaining money by false pretences, through uttering a valueless cheque, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. A TRAGIC SUICIDE. ELTHAM, August 28. J. Chapman, who has just entered into partnership with Riddle, .painter and paperhanger, was found this afternoon in a room at the back of the shop with his throat cut, a razor lying near the body. Life had been extinct for several hours. Little is known locally of deceased, whose wife resides at Levin. CRUELTY TO HORSES. ASHBURTON, August 28. Several cases of alleged cruelty to horses were heard before Mr. G. Day, S.M., yesterday. The police prosecuted in each case. M. H. Zoned, Christchurch inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was the chief witness. Fines were inflicted as follows: —Stephen Ryan £5, Henry Vestenskye 40s, Alexander Knox Redcliffe 20s, John McLauchlin 40s, with costs against each defendant. A charge .against John Johnston for working horses wmle suffering from sores, was dismissed, it having been shown by him that he had no knowledge of the condition of the animals.
