A CLEARING TENDENCY
The rain ceased locally late on Sunday night, and yesterday was beautifully fine. The weather last night was cloudy, but there was no recurrence of the rain. RAINING- IN THE SOUTH. [Per Press Ass'ociation.) BLENHEIM, August 30. Rain has fallen in this district almost continuously since Friday morning, and is still showery. The rivers are all flooded, but so far the banks are holding. Newman’s coach, for Nelson, succeeded in crossing the Wairau ferry this morning. CHRISTCHURCH, August 30. Mr. Wragge, now in Christchurch, supplies the “Star” with a forecast today:—“The great disturbance Dido is increasing in energy. Matters will certainly be worso under her influence before the weather generally improves. Although fine spells may be experienced in some parts, it will be blowing hard in otflers; invariable shifting squalls, more rain, and flooding expected. Shipping specially cautioned that the conditions are treacherous, especially on the West Coast and in the Straits. The East Coast will probably be affected in turn. As already advised another disturbance, named Father Anchises, will follow in due course, and the grand old Aeneid of Virgil will acquire new significance.” An almost continuous drizzle has fallen since midnight on Friday, and it is still raining. Over one inch of rain has fallen in the last 48 hours. The month’s fall is up to 21,- inches, and since- January nearly 21-1 inches. Farmers now feel relieved, as the rainfall. reports' from- the country indicate that tkaraih. has been general.
