THE PENGUIN WRECK.

CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION.

FPer Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 30. The Arbitration Court had before it to-day a number of claims for compensation arising out of the wreck of the Penguin in February last. The claims were generally admitted, the only question being the amount of compensation. In the case of Albert Geo. Lusemore, the third officer, the Union Company agreed to pay £SOO to the Public Trustee for the benefit of the widow. In case of a claim by the parents and brother of Walter Ren-t-oiil, engineer, Mr Justice Sim said that when the Court was properly constituted by the appointment of a successor to tlie late S. Brown, employers’ representative, it would probably make an order on the basis of £135 and costs. An order was made by consent for payment of £207 to the mother of Francis Driscoll, second officer. The Court stated that in the case of a claim by the mother of the late Mrs. Hope, stewardess, it was prepared to make an order for £72 compensation if necessary. His Honor was informed that several claims had been, settled out of Court. The hearing of other claims against the Union Company was adjourned till Thursday. PRESENTATION TO MR. McMENAMIN. A deputation representing surviving passengers and crew of the Penguin waited on Mr. W. McMenamin, at Island Bay, yesterday, and presented him with am address and silver-mount-, eel pipe in recognition of his kindness on the night of the wreck. It may be remembered that it was at his station, near Terawhiti, the survivors were welcomed and cared for.
