SEVERAL CONVICTIONS
„■ [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, August 31. I ' Eight young men were charged in the I Magistrate’s Court, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday afternoon with : having ' played a game of chance ini the- form of '-in the vicinity ’ of. the Thorndom railwa/yr station on the ! 19th inst. The names of the accused were as follows.: George ’Longhurst, ja ines' Martin-; David McCoombe. /Harjrv Meed bam, Edgar Shaw, ,William Henry Shepherd; Joseph Spence, and John . Henry. Murray. All pleaded not guilty. The first-named was dealt with first. •In evidence ‘it was stated by Constables McAnnerin and Thompson?: tliat. in accordance with., instructions they proceeded to the Thorndon railway station, where, through;, the refreshment-room, window, they observed, -in brpad -daylight,, a -number-.or mbn: . clustered .in . a circle, within -a couple, pf;, yards of, them,, tossing coins; into -the;/ air. The accused, according to the policemen, were mostly cabmen of expressmen, awaiting the arrival of the-/. Auckland . express: . An alleged “kip” employed for tossing the money was produced.- Mr ' Herdrnan denied tliat a/game of chance. had been. played. He urged that the p:ieod of stick projduced, and stated to be; the “kip,”, was; off a mailbag. Counsel admitted that ‘the stick-w.as • used by one .of the accused as an for tossing, but onlv-ip. the idle and, harmless, play of trying to see how many heads of pennies he could turn faroup wards. It I was, stated by the accused that'Jt was ;a custom of expressmen to 'toss for positions on the stand when waiting for | bhe /train to arrive. After further, ini quiry, Longhurst, ;Shepherd, and-Mar-i tin were convicted;/ajidvfined £3 each, with costs 7s; in default, seven days’ imprisonment The charges , against the others, with the exception of Murray, /were dismissed.
