EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

[Ter Press Association.] DARGAVILLE, Sept. 2. The heavy rainfall of the last few days has done considerable damage at "Northern Wairoa. Last night Dargaville township was inundated by water to a depth of several inches, the river having overflowed the banks. Several business firms have suffered heavy losses, the damage to goods belonging to Adams, draper, running into over £IOO. The losses at DargavilJo the nothing compared to those occasioned along thej lower reaches of the river, especially at Raupo, where the cattle have been standing on the flats for several days with water up to the belly, and not a blade of grass to be seen. The matter is very serious. Hundred of acres are submerged, and a number of settlers will probably be ruined as the result of the visitation. The floods are the largest known for 20 years. The Government and the member for the district have been qommunicated with.
