FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
FIVE HOUSES DESTROYED
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. This afternon a fire was discovered in a house on Sutherland Road, Maranui, owned by Mr. Wallace, and occupied by Mr. Grosvenor. The brigade promptly responded to the summons, but on arrival at Maranui found that owing to the lack of water its services were of little use. A strong southerly wind was blowing, and the flames spread rapidly to the adjoining house occupied by Mr. Goodwin, and owned by Mr. Alexander Milligan.* This house also was totally destroyed. A third house, also owned by Mr. Milligan, and in the occupation of Mr. H. McKinnon, was likewise destroyed. The flames were blown on to a fourth cottage. This was occupied by Mr. Williams and some other young fellows as a bachelors’ establishment. The owner of it is Mrs. Walker. The whole of the building was destroyed, and a like fate befel a fifth house, owned by Mr. Robert Martin and occupied by Mrs T. Edmonds. Ihe furniture and effects in Mr. Grosvenor s house were all burnt, but from the others <a fair amount was salvaged. One of Mr. Milligan’s houses was insured for £175 in the Commercial Union and the other for £2OO in the Royal, Mr. Wallace’s for £IOO in the South British, Mr. Walker’s for £2OO in the National, and Mr. Martin’s for £4OO in the Ocean office. Mr. Grosvenor s furniture was insured for £IOO in the Yorkshire office.
