CORRESPONDENCE.

[Correspondence on public matters i» welcomed at all times, but it must be distinctly understood that this journal in in no way associated with the opinions of its correspondents. All letters must be legibly written and inscribed on one side of the paper only, otherwise they will not bo published. *An asterisk at the foot of a letter indicates that some portion has been excised.] CRI3IELESS INVERCARGILL. , ;»• • [To The Editor.] Sir, —It was difficult- last year, so near to an election, to get a calm and unbiassed consideration of facts affecting a No-license district, and no doubt there will be the same difficulty again. It is therefore all the more desirable that, electors should make themselves acquainted with facte as they com© under their notice, and they will be better able to appreciate the truth, or otherwise, of what is put before them at the next election* Our daily newspapers supply us with facts in our own district eloquent enough in their pathos to convince anyone of the havoc that is being wrought among us by intemperance. On the other hand, the Press Association telegram from Invercargill in. Saturday's issue must make many an elector envy the reputation of that Nolicense town, where, “in the last 3i vears, only seven convictions have been recorded in tin? Supreme Court on matters that arose in Invercargill. Most of tho cases were of a trivial nature, and two arose in the Awarua district. This is extracted from an article on “Crimeless Invercargill,” and bears out the contention that I repeatedly, made last year that where No-hcense is carried crime’ decreases, because dnninn & decreases.-—I am, etc. i , F. W. CHATTERTON*
