RENEWALS TO STEAMSHIP COMPANIES.
A SERIOUS POSITION. United Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Sept. 4. Regarding the Liverpool and London. Steamship Protection Association’s action in refusing renewals to Australian and New Zealand steamship companies, the secretary of tho Steamship Owners’ Association states that the Australian tonnage excluded from th© benefits of the Association is approximately 390,000 tons, so that the liability transferred to Australian and New Zealand shipowners is £3,507,000. This risk of such magnitude is regarded with the gravest concern by all interested. Unfortunately the tonnage owned, in Australia and New .Zealand is too limited to form similar clubs here. The decision placed members of the Association in an extremely serious position. The whole matter will have to become the subject of most careful consideration.
