A SATISFACTORY EXPLANATION. [P.v®. Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. The mystery connected with, the lifebelts washed ashore on the West Coast, near Mangonui, has been cleared up by a statement that in tbe general cleaning up on the steamer Cornwall, about a week ago, west of Cape Maria, a lot of condemned lifebelts and other rubbish were thrown overboard. They were probably marked with red rust, cerfcainlv not with blood. DUNEDIN, Sept. 4. Tbe s.s. Mokoia reached Sydney last night. The Union Company are advised that no lifebelts were lost by her, consequently those picked up north of Auckland do not belong to the Mokoia.
