Bardsley, accompanied by Carter, went to the wicket. Carter carried the overnight score to 32, chiefly by late cutting. Gibson caught him when standing back from the wicket. Two for 46. Trumper followed. Both batsmen played steadily. A total of 50 was hoisted at the luncheon adjournment. The total was 173—Bardsley 55, Trumper 71. On resuming Trumper immediately gave an easy chance to Carpenter at slip. He had showed superb driving and leg glancing. He was 95 minutes at the wickets,, and hit eight fourers. Three for 175. Bardsley stayed till the total reached 205, and was then caught low down at second slip. He played a patient innings of '66 minutes’ duration. He escaped an easy chance of being run out at 46. Gregory succumbed to the first ball, Gibson making a fine catch standing well back from the wicket. The score wag unaltered. Macartney lost his wicket through playing forward. Six for 218. Ransford batted unsteadily at the start, but livened up afterwards. Seven for 228. The eighth wicket fell for 262. . The Australians’ last wicket added 16, the inningsi lasting -240 minutes. Cotter bowled four no balls in the first two overs. Stumps were drawn before 6 o’clock, owing to the darkness. There were 3000 people present. (Received Sept. 5, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 5.
