Eastern files contain details of the recent great fire at Osaka.' The fire raged for 25 hours, despite the efforts of 600 firemen, 2000 police, and an enormous force of troops. It devastated an area two and a half miles in length, and a quarter to half a mile in breadth. It- destroyed the law courts and many public buildings, including the Government house, schools, temples, museums, and warehouses, and 13,000 houses. The strong wind, long-continued drought, and poor fire brigade equipment were '• factors in increasing the disaster.
