The Pathe Picture exhibition will be resumed at His Majesty’s Theatre this evening. Ladies will be admitted free. The ladies’ committee of the Hospital social is to meet at the residence of tho Mayoress (Mrs. W. D. Lysnar), at 3 p.m. to-day. Any ladies not already on the committee who wish to assist are invited to attend A chess match has been arranged to take place to-morrow afternoon between a team of six players from the Gisborne Chess Club and a similar number from tho Y.M.O.A. The match will take place in the Chess Club’s rooms, and will commence at 2 p.m. The officer in charge of the local branch of the Customs Department (Mr J. Howie) has received advice that owing to heavy floods the timber booms at Tairua have burst, and that as a consequence over 900 logs are adrift. A couple of steamers have been chartered to go in'search of the logs. A rehearsal of the Gisborne Orchestral Society, in preparation for trie concert to be given on Tuesday next, will be held at 8 p.m. to-day in the City Band room. The final rehearsal is to take place on Monday next. The box plan for the concert is to open at Mr. W. Miller’s at 10 a.m. to-mor-row. . The Police Court yesterday morning was presided over by Mr John Towmey, J.P., who dealt with two offenders charged; with drunkenness. Both pleaded guilty. One was fined 5s with costs 2s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, and Harry Whiteside, who had a number of long-standing convictions, was fined 10s with costs 2fc, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. The 'dance at which the members of the Hastings Girls’ High School hockey team were entertained by the Te Huia, Ladies’ Hockey dub last night was a most enjoyable function. It was held in Whin ray’s Hall, where about sixty couples assembled and danced till an early hour to capital music played by a number of the ladies. An excellent supper, also provided by the ladies, was served. Mr. L. Shernff made an efficient M.O. The visitors are to he taken for a drive into the country on Friday. A private message was received in town yesterday announcing the death of Mr. G. F. E. Hindmarsh, at liis residence in Ponsonbv, Auckland. The late Mr. Hindmarsh was well known in Gisborne and on the East Coast. He was a holder of one of the Tauwliareparae leases until about eighteen months ago, when he sold out his interest to' Messrs Reynolds Bros. At last election Mr. Hindmarsh was mentioned as a probable candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat He leaves a widow and small family. • There was only a fair attendance, at the meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Debating Society last evening, when two subjects were set down for debate. The Rev. W, Lamb occupied the chair, and tho first question discussed was: ‘ That preferential voting should be introduced into Parliamentary elections.” Mr. G. E. Darton took the affirmative, and Mr F. S. Malcolm the negative. In tne second debate Mr. H. J. Brownlee contended “That womeu should be allowed to compete with men in commercial life,” and Mr. lan S. Simson supported the contrary view.
