DROWNING FATALITY.

YOUNG NATIVE LOSES HIS LIFE

A very sad fatality occurred yesterday near Pulia, by means of which a youne native, generally known as “Smiler” Ranganui, lost his life. He had been engaged cutting scrub on M'aikohu station, and between 9 and 10 a.m. yesterday, along with a companion, he set- out for the station from the Maori pa at Pulia. going by an old crossing over the M'aikohu river. This crossing, it appeal’s, is generally used, and only a§ a rule for a short cut.

Half-way across the river, which was running high and rapidly, Ranganui s horse was carried off its feet, and with its rider was swept down the river, going under several times. The youth was "seen bv his companion to fall off the horse, ‘ but although immediate search was made, no further trace of the bodv was found. The>,deceased lad was only about 17 years of age, and was very well known in the Pulia district. Up till a late hour last night no news had been received in town as to the recovery of the body.
