Owing to rain play did not start till 2.10 p.m. The wicket was very soft. The attendance of spectators was small.
Barnes played forward; Hopkins caught him shortly afterwards. Nine for 109. Buckenham and Blythe were playing briskly. The latter hit off 17 in ten minutes. Then Buckenham was bowled. The innings lasted 100 minutes. Trumper and Whitty started for the Australians, but ttlio latter was bowlod after making a single. One for 8. Trumper skied one to cover point. Two for 21. His partner added a couple and then gave a catch to Tarrant at long on. Throe for 23. Carkce'k was batting soundly. He gave a chance to Jones at second slip off Buckenham when ho had scored 14. He put iti a useful partnership with McAlister, the latter getting his score in 50 minutes. Four for 82. Oarkeek batted for 85 minutes. Hayes bowled him. Five for 90. Bardsley and Macartney got together, but the latter was bowled immediately without alteration to the total.
