SPIRITUALISTIC MANIFESTATIONS.
The slump in Spiritualistic stock continues in Wellington. The Bailey “manifestations” began there at 25s per head for the curious or the The fee rapidly dropped to ss; and the “show” ‘will, perhaps, fizzle out at “front seats Is, back seats 6d.” Thus far, we have not seen the presence of test and ' conditions; not one of the “manifestations”, has passed (if it has ever reached) the level of third-rate public-house conjuring; and pressing questioners are moved to scorn by the evasiveness, the childish folly, and the vivid “flummery” of the ' alleged “spirits” that, with ungrammatical, lips, are alleged to control the ungrammatical. “meejum.” Yet this is the sort of thing that people are asked to accept as a new revelation of light and grace to a darkened world.—“ New Zealand- Tablet.” ■ . THE MEAT TRUST Once in control of the Argentine supplies, the Trust would command the whole of Britain’s imported beef, and would be able to exercise .a determining 'influence on prices at Smithfield. By underselling the vendors of English meat they could threaten the British cattle-raising industry. The remedy is a duty on all imported chilled beef other than colonial, and unless Britain • follows this course there is likely to be trouble in the future not only for her, but for her meat producing colonies as well. The duty against the Trust would protect the Home cattle-raising industry, and promote the industry in the colonies. Such a duty will, of course, be repugnant to a Free Trade Government, and the proposals of the Liberal Administration with reference to the danger which threatens will be awaited with interest and curiosity. The position is one of very great importance to this colony and to Australia. by whom developments will bo' watched with no l small anxiety—Southland Times.”
