It is quite evident from our cablegrams that Mr Asquith’s Government is in exceedingly troubled waters at the present time, and general indications are to the effect that a general election cannot be long postponed. Whether or not an appeal to the electors will result in the' policy of the present Government being confirmed is exceedingly problematical, but if the British Premier is deposed from power he may derive some satisfaction from the fact that like Prince Bulow, the German Chancellor, he has been the victim of uncontrollable circumstances. As a result of the Kaiser’s demand for/ a huge navy Prince Bulow was called upon to find an additional £20,000,000 in taxation arid he found it impossible to do this without offending every interest in the Reichstag. By so adjusting his Budget that farmers, manufacturers, stockbrokers, tradesmen and the working classes all provided a share of the additional capital needed he sought' to make the burden appear light, but instead he only succeeded in arousing the strenuous opposition of each section. They alb wanted a navy f>o beat the world, but when the Chancellor presented the bill they howled him down.
