FIRE ON A STEAMER.
S.S. I’OMOANA’S CARGO ABLAZE
[Per Presb Association.] DUNEDIN, Sept. 14. When the ; hatches were removed from the s.s. Tomoana this morning, for the continuation of discharge of her cargo, a considerable volume of smoke issued from No. 5, ’tween decks, hold. Investigation showed that the fire bad started near some cases of agricultural machinery, the woodwork of two of them having been burnt off. The fire was extinguished before any material damage was done, but bad it not been for thef timely discovery of the outbreak, the result might have been disastrous, as the vessel had 8675 cases of kerosene, 500 cases of turpentine, 1375 eases of benzine, and 1700 cases of gas oil aboard besides a lot of lumber.
