FURTHER. DETAILS. Following are the particulars of cost of a tramway scheme, submitted by Mr. J. It. Jones to the Gisborne Borough Council: — ESTIMATED SUMMARY OF CAPITAL EXPENDITURE. £ TracS, say 4 miles at £2750 ... 11,000 Three petrol cars complete, at £1,050 each 3,150 5 per cent for contingencies... 795 ESTIMATED SUMMARY OF RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. —Receipts.— £ Traction : Freights to and from various places should return, say 100 Passengers : It is somewhat difficult to estimate the returns from passenger fares, but by taking full advantage of Id sections, and comparing the population of Gisborne to such centres as Wanganui, Napier, and Hastings, the actual results from the former, and the estimated results from the two latter towns, the returns from the passenger traffic in Gisborne would not be less than, say ... 4,000 £4.100 —Expenditure. — WagevS: 2 drivers, 2 conductors, and mechanic 650 Petrol . 250 Oil, grease, etc. ... 100 Interest at 5 per cent. 835 Depreciation, 7\ per cent, on cars --• 250 Depreciation, 2£ per cent on track ••• ••• 285 Repairs ,-•• I°o £2,520 Profit ••• ••• ••• £1)580 Mr. Jones was also asked what the cost would be for seven miles of tramway, which would permit of a twenty minute service from Taruhcru freezing works to the Wainui beach, with a connecting line coming> across- from Whataupoko. This increased his estimate' to £24,945.
