The U.S.tS. Co.’s Waikare, a day late, arrived from south yesterday morning, and left again for Auckland. She leaves Auckland on the return trip at midnight to-morrow, and will not Ibe tendered at this port until Monday morning. There will only be one launch, the time for which has not yet been fixed. ~ , „ The U.S.S. Co.’s Squall left lor Auckland direct last evening, taking a shipment of sheep. Details of her cargo for this oort were as follows: 432 sacks coal, 7*5 cases benzine, 200 bags lime, 7662 ft timber, 30 cases kerosene, 60 bags flour, 80 bags sugar, 30 bags cement, 175 pines, 17 case.* ale, 1000 tiles, 25 tons transhipments ex Apariina, 100 tons do ex Umta, transhipments ex Mokoia. . , The schooner Awanui has arrived at Auckland, and leaves' there to-morrow for Tologa Bay and Gisborne. The s.s. Tuatea will be placed on the slip on Monday/to undergo her annual survey and overhaul. The U.S.S. Co’s Flora is at present working Coast bays on her way south to this port. The U.S.S. Co.’s Kaituna was expected to leave Auckland last night for Gisborne. After discharging 300 tons of coal for the Gisborne Gas Company, she goe% on to Napier with the balance of her cargo. 1 > The scow Novelty is a novel type oi vessel in several respects. She is fitted with an auxiliary screw, but _ the motive power is steam, and not oil, as is usual in vessels of her class. She is a vessel of very solid construction, her frames are all of steel, with best kauri planking. The Novelty is, apart from her auxiliary engines, of the ordinary scow type, broad of beam, with tour hatches, arranged in pairs on either side of two centre-boards. Her registered tonnage is only 98 tons, hut she will carry 275 tons of coal, or 130,000 ft of timber on a draught of 6ft 3in. Besides the master, her crew comprises a mate, an engineer, three able seamen, on© fireman, and. a cook. All hands live aft, in a large deckhouse, the quarters being unusually roomy and comfortable. The engine-room is in 'the same house, and is very compact. The boiler and funnels are on the port side of the vessel, their weight being counter-balanced by fresh water tanks on the other side. The engine is small and compact, of the compound surfacecondensing type, and is capable of driving the vessel at to 4 knots an hour in fine weather on the small consumption of 12owt in 24 hours. The Novelty is rigged with three masts carrying a good spread of fore and aft canvas, and is said to s a il well, and to lie a very comfortable vessel in a seaway. The vessel is at present loading at Lyttelton for Kaipara. So far, it seems that no public announcement has been made as to the extent of the advantage gained by combining reciprocating engines with turbines in one ship. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Otaki is the steamer best known in New Zealand of that class, the other pioneer of the principle being the trans-Atlantic liner Laurentic. Apparently the Otaki which has been making excellent time on her voyages has thoroughly satisfied her owners. Hard on the heels of the news that the company’s new passenger liner Ruahine had been launched comes the news that the company has contracted with Messrs William Denny and Brothers, of Dumbarton, for the construction of another passenger and cargo steamer, to be about 11,000 tons gross register. She will be an improvement on the new Ruahine, but instead of triple-expansion engines with which the Ruahine i s fitted,' she is to have "a combination of turbino and tripleexpansion engines, as in the case of the Otaki. The directors of the White Star Line have been watching keenly the performance of the Laurentic, and it is practically certain that the 45,000ton leviathans Olympic and Titanic are 'to have combination engines. ■Y TELEGRAPH.
