Santos Dumont at St. Cyr travelled five miles in five minutes across country upon an aeroplane carrying an area of canvas of nine square metres, compared with 53 square metres of Wright’s biplane. The- aeroplane and motor cost £2,000. M. Santos Dumont’® patents are public property. A FRENCH DIRIGIBLE’S PERFORMANCE. (Received September 16, 10.15 p.m.) PARIS, Sept. 16. The dirigible "Repubiique,” at a height of 1000 metres, made a circuit of 100 kilometres at the manoeuvres at La Palisse. Then hovered 250 metres above the defenders and dropped a hag full of observations by staff officers abroad. A PROPOSED'CONTEST ABANDONED. (Received September 16, 10.45 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 16. The Wembley aviation contest hasbeen abandoned, M. Bleriot and Mr. Latham declaring the ground unsuitable.
