POVERTY BAY GOLF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.
This afternoon the local links will he the scene of the final fight to decide who is to have, the honor of holding the title of championship player of the district. Thies contestants will be Pare Keiha, who has held the title for the past six years, and Geoff "Wiliock, one of the very best of the younger generation of players. The match will be played over a 36-hole course, and the first round will start at 12 o’clock. Mr. J. Howie, who is regarded as the local golf Cicero, will act as umpire, and there is certain to be a very largo crowd of .golfers a-nd tbe general public present to- watch the match. Iveiha has bad a fairly stiff row to ho© in his passage through the championship tournament, having to meet such solid players .as Howie, Dodgshun, and Luttrell, while Wiliock had a tough opponent to master in the first rouric* in Traill, Gibson being his opponent m the second round, and 0 Meara forfeiting to him in the third, The match to-day will be the more interesting as the contest will be one of the veteran against the colt. , Pare Ksiha is & seasoned old veteran of 39 summers, and what he does not know about the game few can teach him, while Geott Wiliock, who is only 22 stands for youth, which is ever knocking at t "door and insisting on its rights to
J I occupy the highest places. “Youth must l be served,” is an adage which especially applies to athletics, but it remains to be seen whether the colt can uphold his challenge to the veveran in the lists to-day. Both players learned their golf in the Poverty Bay district, and thus, whoever wins, the honor will not go to an outsider. The match should provide a first-class exposition of the game, and should be well worth watching.
