THE UMHLOTI WRECK.
STRUCK DURING CALM WEATHER United Press Association —Copyright LONDON, Sept. 17. The Umhloti struck during calm weather. There was little fog. There were 47 passengers. Many were in their night attire when they assembled on deck. Believing the steamer was sinking, they sang the hymn, “'Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” The first boat, with thirteen passengers, capsized. All scrambled back except a baby. The other boats beaded seawards. Owing to the refusal of the Lascars to row, the passengers and crew had to do so. They baled continuously with hoots, hate, and biscuit tins.
The disaster has caused an increasing demand for a lighthouse at Slangkop Point.
