JUNIOR GRADE. KAITI-CITY (5) v. UNITED (0). The weather was fine and tbe ground on the Domain good on Saturday afternoon when the semi-final between. KaitiCity and United was played. There was a fair attendance of spectators, and the game was of an exciting nature. City kicked off against a slight breeze, United defending the western goal. A nice run by O’Neill and Huston carried to United’B twenty-five, where R. Somervell marked) and sent out well down tbe field. From the throw-in G. Pollock kicked to City’s twenty-five. Play was then transfererd t-o centre and United penalised for off-side play. City then got the leather to United twenty-five and out near the corner. Good kicking by PiE cher and G. Pollock relieved United, and play was centred. From a scrum Wyllle started a. passing bov.it for United, the ball going to Nicolas, Pollock, Olsen and) R. Somervell, ,the latter being forced out in City’s twenty-five.
C. Pollock, with a beautiful line kick to centre, relieved his side. Then another rush was started for United, Nicolas, Pollock and Olsen carrying play back to City’s twenty-five, and a little later City forced. Play centred after the kick out, then AVyllie and Somervell were instrumental! in carrying back to City’s twenty-five. A number of lino outs followed and things looked like a scoro for United. On City’s lino a fine piece of play took place. P. Fromm intercepted a pass and broke through the United forwards and carried play to centre, where even play followed. Then V. Somervelle marked and Pollock tried a kick at goal. The ball went low and City forced. From the kick out the two O’Neills made a prominent run and sent the ball out in United twenty-five. Then City were penalised, and Somervell returnedl to centre, where Fromm marked and Bristow sent a nice kick out in United’s twenty-five. City forwards, headed by O’Neill and Whitfield, pressed but as a result of a hard kick United forced, and half time was sounded. From the commencement of the second spell the game got slower, the ball staying Tn centre field for a considerable time. A good kick by Nicolas sent the leather well intoi City’s territory, but Stubbs received and returned well. United were penalised near the centre and Bristow attempted a kick at goal. Pollock charged and spoilt the kick and the hall went out. From the throw in Fromm marked almost in the same place and Bristow again had a shot without success, and United kicked out in their own twentyfive. Good kicking by Olsen, Nicolas and Somervell got play baqk to City’s territory and they were hard pressed, but C. Pollock got away and kicked clear to United’s twenty-five, where from a penalty Peach O’Neill tried a kick at goal, but unfortunately missed the ball. From a mark in the same place by Oman he had another shot, hut without success. City pressed hard and soon had United on their line, but a force relieved. United then took play to City’s end and caused them to force. Good kicking by Pollock got back to City’s twenty-five, where a series of line outs followed. From a throw in City forwards rushed across United’s line and AlcGregor scored. Stubbs added the major points with a beautiful kick. City then .played a defensive game, and although United got near City’s line, the time proved too short for further scores and the game ended leaving City to play off for the final with Y.AI.C.A. next Saturday. Air. J. J. Alartin made an excellent referee.
THIRD GRADE. PRACTICE MATCH. The Kaiti-City thirds and the Alakauri thirds played a practice match prior to the junior game, the result being City 9 to nil. Air G. Whitfield refereed. AUCKLAND DEFEATS SYDNEY UNIVERSITY. TPkr Pkkss Association.! AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. On Saturday Auckland City beat Svdnev University by 27 points to 6, the game being in City’s favor all the way through, the University never having a look in. OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY. DUNEDIN, Sept. 18. The football match Otago v. Canterbury, was played here to-day in splendid weather, resulting in a win for the former by 9 points to 3 points. The Otago forwards were superior to their opponents, especially in the scrums, the result being that the Canterbury backs, who were faster and more resourceful than those on tho Otago side, got few chances. For the winners Casey and Alitcbell scored, and Scott kicked a penaity goal. For Canterbury Alitcbell scored.
