HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE. [Per Presb Association.] WELLINGTON, Sept 20. 1 The High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, 18th, states: —The mutton market is firm, supplies decreasing. There is an endeavor amongst holders to raise the price of mutton in anticipation of small shipments. Canterbury 3>d, North Island 3id, River Plate 3jd. The lamb market is weak, the stock
being heavy and selling at present prices for mutton. Canterbury o 2 d, North Island 3Jd. The beef market is quiet, with a fair local demand. New Zealand hindquarters 3|d, forequarters 2?cl. The butter market is very farm for best quality, and advancing steadily. The “Grocer” newspaper advises that forward purchase should be avoided at the present state of the marker. Price for New Zealand butter to-day is 118 s. ex Tura'kina, Australian 114 s, Danish 1245, Siberian 106 s. The cheese market is dull, with only a small demand, buyers holding back and expec - ing prices to go lower; New Zealand 58s, Canadian 575. The hemp market is steady, no transactions of importance are reported New Zealand good, fair, on spot, £26 fair, on spot, £2o, fair current Manila, on spot, £2o, October-December shipments, New Zealand good, fair, £2o 15s, far, £24 los, fair current Manila £24 10s. The Maiila output was 2000 bales. The wool market is very firm, with general confidence in the maintenance of present prices for some time and an advance generally is expected. The hop market is very firm; supplies will be short.
