THE NAVY LEAGUE.

VISIT OF H.M.S. PROMETHEUS TO-DAY.

The third-class cruiser Prometheus left Auckland yesterday for South, and information was received in town during the day that she will call at Gisborne on her way down the coast. His Worship the Mayor received telegrams yesterday from the Hon. Jns. Carroll and the Mayor of Auckland, announcing the visit, and unless time is taken for gun practice, on -the trip down, the vessel should arrive in Gisborne about 8 o’clock this morning. The Mayor and executive of the- local branch of the Navy League will visit the warship when she arrives, and arrangements have also been made with Mr. Preston, local manager of the Union Steams hip! Co., to convey as many of the 800 children members of the League, as care to go to the vessel for the purposes of inspection. The s.s. Tuatea will leave the wharf on the first trip at 1.30 p.m., and if sufficient inducement offers other trips will also be made. Preference will be given to members of the League, who are requested to bring their tickets when they will he conveyed to and from the warship free of charge. Others, who are not members of the League, will, if possible, be taken at a reasonable charge. The management of the Pathe Pictures has invited the officers and men of the warship to attend the performance in His Majesty’s Theatre to-night, when special seats will be provided for them. The invitation has been extended to as many as can obtain the necessary leave. H.M.S. Prometheus is a tlnrd-class cruiser, of 2135 tons, carrying eight guns. She was built in 1898, and is capable of steaming 20 knots per hour. Commander John C. T. Glossop is in charge of the vessel. H.M.S. Challenger, which visited Gisborne some months ago, will pay another visit about the middle of next month. She is expected to arrive in Auckland next Thursday, from Suva, conveying the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, on his return to the Dominion.

Mr. C. W. Palmer, general secretary of the Navy League, nas signified his intention of coming to Gisborne on the occasion of the visit of the Challenger. Mr. Palmer will, in all probability, deliver an illustrated address to the members of the League on the work of the navy.
