Captain Corrance, of the steamer Vienna, which has reached Newcastle from the East, says the coal trade has been captured 'ey the .Japanese. Their coal can be landed in Hongkong in six days, as against twenty days from Newcastle. This is a big advantage,, and the captain says Australian coal has no cliance, in the Hongkong market at least. . . . Speaking at the combined shipping companies’ annual smoke concert at Wellington recently, when he proposed the toast of “The New Zealand Mercantile Marine,” the Hon. J. A. Millar remarked that the lads in New Zealand wore net- keen on following a seafaring life. Unfortunately, many of the masters of the New Zealand mercantile marine were not born in this country. He believed that when, lads' saw the avenues to shore occupations closed to them they would have to go to sea. The fault with, the British mercantile marine in the past had been the lack -of sufficient attraction in a seafaring life, but nowadays there had been a vast improvement in conditions, and everything was being done to add to the comfort; and welfare of thg seamen. With the constant evolution of the K-ne of vessel now in the service of the mercantile marine mas appeared a class of men for whose services there existed no necessity a comparatively a few years ago. He referred to engineers. To them was due much of the credit for the results wo saw to-day in the mercantile marine. Vessels kept time to an hour, and the clockwork regularity of steamers had enormously increased the labors of marine engineers, who. however, had been quite equal to the occasion, and had responded well to the demands put upon them.
