FIREWOOD.

GOING TO WASTE

“Anxious” writes to the Wellington “Post” as follows: —“ln travelling down tho Main Trunk railway I was struck by the thought of all that waste wood lying there, and so many men who could out it up at 8s per day and put it on the railway. It could be delivered in the town at 30s per cord, and could be sold easily to the bakers and wood merchants. Men would be employed, the land cleared, and the Government receive a good return. There is a good road to truck it at many places'. I consider something should be done in this direction; perhaps somebody would suggest something as a means to get our Government to do something, as I consider they are wasting good material and money. Wliat was gained in that direction could bo used to metal the roads in the backblocks for the settlers, as some that I saw were a standing disgrace for women and children to travel on. I suppose i wo should, be told that tho Qovernment was competing with the timber merchants. Not at all. This would only be the means of using up. the wood on the railwayside, and finding work for some men who could do it on piecework. It would take many men from the town, and they would make good wages. The cost of transit would he very small.”
