SELLING WINE WITHOUT LICENSE. rpicii Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Sept. 28. At the Police Court George Francovitch was fined £25 and costs for selling wirie without a license. Mr Cutten, S.M., replying to defendant’s solicitor, expressed the opinion that defendant, being a wholesale wine merchant, was entitled- to have a large quantity of wine on his premises, but he declined to make an order for the return of a largo quantity of liquor seized by the police. Notice of appeal was given.

ALLEGED MURDER. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, an unmarried girl, aged 19, was charged with having, on or about August 11th, concealed the birth of her male child, and secondly, with having murdered the said child. After evidence similar to that given at the inquest had been heard, the girl, who reserved her defence, was committed for trial, bail being fixed in two sureties of £209 each.

An inquiry instituted by the Attor-ney-General as to whether the area in which wholesale licenses were granted by the Taumarunui Licnsing Committee was or was not native land at tho time of the issue of the proclamation resulted in the establishment of the fact that it was not native land at the time. That being so, Dr Findlay says that proceedings cannot be taken to attack the granting of licenses.

NEW PRISON GATE HOME. Hie Salvation Army authorities propose to establish a orison gate home in Wellington, and have purchased a site for it at Island Bay. It consists of some six acres of land. „ RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVES.

THAMES, Sept. 28. Messrs Price Bros, have received official intimation from the Government that their tender has been accepted for constructing ten railway locomotives. The firm i s just completing a contract for ten 70-'ton engines, which have been highly praised by the Railway Department and the Government. THEOLOGICAL VACANCY AT KNOX COLLEGE. DUNEDIN, Sept. 28. Dr Robert Law, of the United Free Church, Edinburgh, Dr David Smith, of the United Free Church, Blairgowrie, and Rev. John Dickie, of Tarland, Aberdeenshire, are candidates for the vacant theological chair at Knox College. All are eminent authors, and acknowledged to be preachers of ability.
