The IJ.S.S. Co.’s Squall returned to Auckland last evening. , The Huddart-Parker Co.’s Wimmera arrives from South to-morrow morning, and leaves later for Auckland and SvdIJ.S.S. Co.’s Monowai returns from Auckland on Sunday afternoon, and proceeds South during the evening- , , Tho U.S.S. Co.’s Flora was expected to clear Coast ports yesterday, and to sail for Auckland. . The steamers Koromiko and Waihora, which arrived at Auckland on September 25th, from Fiji, brought respectively cargoes of 8500 tons and 6500 tons of raw sugar. A correspondent, writing to tho Christchurcn “Star,” states that a small steamer lately left a coastal port carrying 500 ewe sheep; some thirty were slung overboard on tho passage, and some forty were buried on arrival at Orakeii An unfortunate farmer, says the writer, loses 70 of his sheep, the Dominion suffers the loss of 140 ewes and lambs, and the steamer takes no risks. There has been launched at South Shields, London, a very powerful and finely-modelled twin-screw steamer named Dewan, which has been built to the order of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company for service at Bombay. She is of the following dimensions: —Length, 120 ft; breadth, 26ft; depth, and is built of steel under special survey at Lloyd’s to class 100 Al. In the engine-room there is a very powerful steam fire pump by Messrs Merry weather and Sons, Ltd., capable of discharging 650 gallons per minute, and the same pump is also adapted for salvage work. The propelling machinery consists of two sets of triple compound surface-condensing engines, each set having cylinders 13£in, 22in, and 36in in diameter, with a stroke of 27in. Steam is supplied by two single-ended boilers 13ft 7£in in diameter by 10ft Gin long, each fitted with three patent -withdrawable furnaces, the working pressure being 1701 b to the square inch.
