A MARITIME DISPUTE.
AN UNOFFICIAL CONFERENCE
[Per Press Association.l LYTTELTON, October 1. The Waitemata’s crew and Mr Young had an interview with Captain Marciel, Marine Superintendent, at 11 o’clock to-day. Mr Lauren son was also present. Mr Young objected to the presence of reporters. The interview is proceeding'. . The conference, which was distinctly unofficial, decided to communicate with the Union Company, in‘an attempt to settle the dispute, in a conciliatory manner. A further conference will he held this afternoon to consider the company’s reply. 1 DUNEDIN, Oct. 1.
In connection with the discharge of the Waitemata’s crew at Newcastle, the Union Company states that when it was decided to despatch a vessel to Manila, the men were informed that thev could remain on her and proceed to Manila at foreign-going rates of pay. As alternative they were offered a transfer to the Whangape, then lying at Sydney, and which it was intended to place in commission again, or free passages back to Lyttelton.
