In a paper read before a conference of the Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilders of Scotland and the North-east Coast Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilders on August 4 and 5 EngineerCommander W. McK. Wilson, gave some interesting information about the Otaki’s combination of reciprocating and turbine engines. He said that the Otaki was practically a sister ship to the twin-screw vessels Oran and Opawa, the modifications being made only to meet the requirements of the engines. On the measured mile the Orari made 14.6 knots and the Otaki 15 knots on a total water consumption of 6 per cent. less. The coal consumption of the Otaki on the run from Clyde to Liverpool worked out at 1.3871 b per 'horse-power. The coal consumption from Liverpool to Teneriffe was 11 oer cent, less than the mean for the Orari and Opawa under similar conditions, and at practically the same speed. On the round voyage the Otaki averaged 11.09 knots per hour, and the gain in coal consumption over the two sister boats was about 500 tons, which, considering that the vessel’s bottom wag abnormally foul, was very satisfactory.
