PRESIDENT TAFT.
AN APPARENT ATTEMPT AT ASSASSINATION.
United Press Association— Copyright (Received October 4, 12.22 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 3.
While President Taft was entering his automobile at Portland to participate in a military parade, a man in the crowd was arrested while trying desperately to Teach the President, ostensibly for the purpose of taking his portrait. He was found to be in possession of a six-chambered revolver and a quantity of ammunition. [The occurrence is ominous from the fact that during the last 45 years three Presidents of the United States —Lin’coln, Garfield, and McKinley—have perished by the revolvers of assassins.]
