GOLF.

MIXED FOURSOME. Saturday afternoon saw the curtain rung down on the 1909 golf season in Poverty Bay. A mixed foursome was played, and brought out 24 pairs. The weather was almost too warm for golf, and the grass was a little on the Tong side in places, as is only to be expected at thi s season of the year. After an interesting competition, the winners turned up in Miss N. Seymour and It. Willock, who returned the very good card of 66—9—57 for the twelve holes. The following were the scores : Miss N. After the ladies of the Club had provided afternoon tea, all present assembled in front of the pavilion. Mr. R. J. Reynolds, president of the Poverty Bay Golf Club, said that the afternoon’s play had brought the season to a- close. The season had been one of the most sucessful in th,e history of the Club. Not only had there been more players out on the links, hut the enthusiasm shown had been keener than during any previous year. The i Club had been managed well. The new j links had been well laid out, and kept W' in good order. It bad been the unanimous opinion of members that the success of the season had been due in large measure to the capable and untiring f® manner in which their honorary secretary had carried out his duties. -(Ap■plause.) To mark their appreciation of -what Mr. Traill had done for the Club during the season, the members had asked him to hand to that gentleman a little souvenir of the season. Mr. Reynolds then presented Mr. Traill w with a handsome silver-mounted oak "'‘"Afternoon tea tray, suitably inscribed.^ ‘Mr. Traill briefly responded, and said thaT he accepted the presentation in the spirit in which it had been offered, and he took it that the gift was meant to convey the members’ appreciation of the manner in which the Club’s affairs had been run during the season. He was .glad to think they were satisfied -with his efforts •on their behalf, and he thanked them for their kindly recognition of the- work ho had done. NAPIER LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. FPeu Press Association.! NAPIER, October 2. The Napier Ladies’ Club’s annual golf tournament was concluded to-day in beautiful weather. Miss Braithwaite and Miss Hindmarsh met in the final of the championship, and Miss Braithwaite proved the winner by 2 np. It ■was a splendid contest. The players ■were all square when half-way, and •£the issue was in doubt to the end.
