THE BUDGET BATTLE
United Puggs Abhooiation—Copyniam LONDON, October 3. According to the “Standard,” Mr. Burns and Mr. Lewis Harcourt are emphatically of the opinion that the House of Lords will not reject the Budget. THE “SPECTATOR’S” OPINION. (Received October 4, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. The “Spectator” anticipates that the Lords will reject the Budget. It would prefer its passage, lest an election should give a lease of power to the Radicals, whose return would do grave mischief. It believes that the country’s disgust within six or eight months would force a general election, when socialism could be fought to better advantage. THE LORDS AND THE BUDGET. The “Daily Chronicle” addressed a telegraphic question on the Budget to several Unionist Peers. Viscount Peel replied, “I hope the Lords will pause before taking the extreme step of rejecting the Finance Bill.” Earl Delawarr said: “In rejecting the Budget the Lords will be taking a very great risk. If their action is not endorsed, their veto will be rudely shaken.” Baron Monteagle replied: “Much as I disapprove of the Budget, I do not approve of the Lords rejecting it.” Lords Avebury and Kinnoull favor the Lords giving an opportunity of appeal to the country.
