ATHLETICS

NEW RECORDS ESTABLISHED

R. E. Walker competed at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, on August 7, in the 100 yards handicap invitation race of the Rangers Football Club’s sports. In his heat it looked bad for the South African for three-fourths of the journey, but in the last twenty yards he put in one of his characteristic bursts, and just got home. In the final Duncan, tht Scottish champion, with three yards start, made a plucky challenge ten yards from the tape, but Walker, with another splendid effort, got homo in the fine time of 9 4-ssec. N. J. Cartmell, the American, who was also running, failed in his last heat, and appeared to he a trifle off-color, says an exchange. On the second day Wadier again, ran brilliantly, and in the 120 yards invitation handicap created a new record, four watches agreeing on 11 3-5 sec., and one making it a fraction faster. Cartmell, who also competed, was fourth. R. C. Duncan received four yards, and was a yard and a half behind the winner. A 150 yards handicap invitation race was also put in the programme, with a view to giving Walker a chance to lower the 15sec record of A. R. Downer. Of four invited, Walker was the only one to turn out, yet, without the stimulus of competition, he accomplished the distance in the record time of 14 4-ss.ee. The

‘ meeting was remarkable throughout. A. J. Robertson, the Broughton Harrier crack, also made a new record in the mile and a half handicap, which he finished in 6min 38 2-ssec. The Previous best was Gmin 49 2-ssec, by A. Slirubb. Then, again, A. E M. Rowlands, the New Zealander, broke the three-mile walking record, winning by fifteen yards in 21mm 49 1-osec, and beatino- R. Quinn, to whom he conceded thirty yards, and R. Qumn s previous record of 22mm' 31 3-ssec made in 1907 Cartmell won his heat in tne 300 yards in 31 2-ssec, but was only fourth in the final, although his tune was 31 4-ssec, one second behind the winner, to whom lie conceded fifteen yards.
