HAWKE’S BAY SPRING MEETING. [Pku Piikks Association.! HASTINGS, October 6. The first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-day was favored with fine weather and a good attendance. The sum of £5992 was invested on the totalisator, as compared with £6379 on the corresponding day last year, or a decrease op £387. Eleven bookmakers were on the ground. The results of the racing were: Tomoana Hack Hurdle Race, 12miles. —Polyanthus 10.13, 1; Waipunehu 9.4, 2; Erl King 9.9, 3. Also started: Martyrium. Nadine, Haurangi, Whareponga. The third day’s racing in connection with the Australian Jockey Club s spring meeting took place to-day. The following were the results: — Second Hurdle Race, 2| miles.— Loadstar 10.2, 1; Golden Brown 9.0, 2; Winsign 9.9 3. Twelve starters. Won
easily by three lengths. Kairoma was prominent in the early part of the race, but faded into the ruck, and finished last. Time, 4min 45see. Craven Plate, 12 miles. —Maltine 1, Blue Book 2, Parsee 3. Eight starters. When going Lord Nolan took charge, followed by Maltine, Hyman, Hoax, and Parsee, with Mountain King last. There was little change till the halfmile, when Hoax joined Lord Nolan, the pair being clear of Maltine, with Parsee, Hyman, and Montcalm next. Rounding the turn Hoax dropped hack. Maltine joined Lord Nolan as they reached the half-distance, Blue Book and Parsee coming fast joined issue, and from a great, finish, Maltine won by a neck from Blue Book, Parsee three-quarters of a length away. Suburban Handicap, 1 mile.—Mundrie 7.11, 1; Rose Ailie 7.9, 2 ;War Bee 7.3, 3. Sixteen starters. Rose Ailie led’ to the half-distance, but Mundrie shooting to the front, easily won by two lengths. Time, lmin 392 sec. Grantham Stakes, 1 mile.—Grist 1, Danilo 2, Patronatus 3. Ten starters. Doon Lassie showed the way for half-a-mile from Grist and Wyella. Grist then went to the front, established a good lead, and was never overhauled, Danilo. finishing fast, got within half-a-length, two lengths between second and third. Time.' lmin 40sec. Gimcrack Stakes. 42 furlongs.—Gigadra 1, Precious 2, Sylvander 3. Twen-ty-two starters. Precious made the running well into the straight. Gigandra drew level at the half-distance, and passing the leader, won comfortably bv two lengths. Time, 55sec. Sydney Handicap, 12 miles—Vavasor 7.12, 1; Britain 6.12, 2; Orange 7.0,3. Fifteen starters. Won by a length. Time, 2min 34|sec. The weather was fine and the attendance large. Provocation, Golden Slipper, and Maranui were all scratched lor the Craven Plate.
SALE OF A RACEHORSE. (Received October 6, 8.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 6. Royal Blue, winner of the Kensington and Squatters’ Handicaps, has been sold for 750 guineas to an Indian buyer, with a contingency of £3OO in the event of the horse winning either the Caulfield or Melbourir«''Cups.
