IMPERIAL DEFENCE.

CABLE NEWS.

MANNING THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY. United Press Association —Copyiught. (Received October 7, 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 7. In the House of Commons, Lord Winterton {Conservative member for the Horsham division of Sussex) asked Mr. McKenna whether the Admiralty intended to lend the Commonwealth 2000 men in connection with the navy agreement, and whether the personnel of the navy was in such order as to be able to make good the loss to the Imperial navy. Mr. McKenna replied that it was premature to make a statement on the subject. He did not know that 2000 was the . number that would be sent. Lord Winterton was in error in assuming that the Imperial personnel would necessarily he decreased, since many British seamen were already on the Australian station. Replying to Major Anstruther Gray (Conservative member for St. Andrew’s Brughs), Mr. McKenna declined to discuss the question whether the Admiralty would diminish the number of men on the Australian station, or whether they would be replaced by colonials.
