CONCERT AT PATUTAHI
There wjs a very large attendance in the Patutalii public hall on Thursday night, when the Turanga Musical Society inaugurated their second season by the rendition of a miscellaneous programme and Dr. F. Cowen’s cantata entitled “The Rose Maiden.” The attendance included a number of Gisborne people, who drove out in a brake. The hall was tastefully decorated, and a most enjoyable entertainment- was provided. The miscellaneous programme consisted of an overture by the orchestra from the “Merry Widow”; songs, “May Day Morn,” Miss M. Gray; “Yeoman’s Wedding Song,” Mr. H. J. MeClymont; and a violin solo, “Hope tells a Flattering Tale,” Air. A. Warnecke. Each item was deservedly applauded. The Cantata was excellently rendered, under the conductorship of Mr. Alexander Gray. The lady performers were all dressed in white, and wore red and white roses. The various items in the cantata were enthusiastically received by tlie large audience. Falkner; recit., “Alas! The Hand is Thine,” Mr Parsons; chorus, “Oh! Earth-born Sorrow”; trio, “Hast Thou Wandered?” Mrs. Parsons, Miss M. Falkner, and Mr MeClymont; air, “The Sleep of Even,” Mr. Parsons; recit., “Hark! Beneath Her ..-Window,” Mr. McClymont; duet, “I Know a Rosebud Shining,” Mrs. Parsons and Mr. Hignett; chorus, “’Tis Thy Wedding Morn”; solo, “Where Gloomy Pine Trees Rustle,” Mr. MeClymont; recit., “For from the Summer Blossom,” air “Tearless She Gazed Upon Blim,” Mr. Parsons; chorus, “What Sounds There So Softly?” male voices; chorus of elves, “Farewell, Sleep Thou Lightly,” female voices; finale, solo and chorus, “Yea, E’en as Die the Roses,” Mr. Parsons I 'and chorus.
