MOTHER’S REST.

When mother rests, what is it latticed through her dreams, Held overhead like tracery on sunlit streams ? / Down through the darkening halls she bears the ceaseless heat From- the white room above of little -pattering feet. ’Tis the same wondrous journey taken o’er and o’er. For boundary line the high knob of the nursery door. Sometimes with interruptions in the unknown path Of bumps, and cries, and kisses —the sweet aftermath. Then, as the twilight deepens, And its silvery light without Lulls the heavy-headed flowers, Calls the bats and gray moths out— Along the little twisty lane And through the sweet night air, Will creep the sandman, shod with stealth. To climb the nursery stair— Mingling with the gentle creak of the rocking chair, _ < A deepening silence falls: and in his tumbled hair. Weary, the travellers feels the kiss of night, and lies Close the sheltering arms of sleep as the day dies. Safely pushed out from, shore, Dreamangel at the mast — The tired pother nods her head and rests r.t Inst. . While through the blackening fringe of hush and tree The curious harvest moon rolls up to see. —Maria Scott (in.“ Vogue.”) -■
